Deputy Africa Director.
• Team: Africa – Regional
• Location: NRGI Registered Countries – Senegal or DRC highly preferred
• Supervises: Country Leads in Africa, Africa Finance Officer, and Finance and Compliance Coordinator
• Contract type: Permanent
• Country Starting Annual Salary: Senegal: XOF 61,434,359 (West African CFA franc)

Plus, a 10% pension contribution, international health cover, and attractive holiday allowances are additional to the salary (see full list of benefits below).

About the Role
The Deputy Africa Director plays a critical role in advancing NRGI’s mission by strengthening strategy and systems for quality program delivery and effectiveness across Africa. Reporting to the Africa Director, this position ensures that NRGI’s work in the region remains impactful, contextually relevant, and aligned with its overarching vision: empowering people in low- and middle-income, resource-rich countries to build inclusive, resilient, and prosperous societies while advancing just energy transitions.
As a key member of the Africa Leadership Team, the Deputy Africa Director works closely with the Africa Director to translate NRGI’s strategic objectives into actionable regional and country priorities. They lead on program quality, operational oversight, and adaptive management, ensuring coherence across country strategies, funding priorities, and compliance with internal and external system and process requirements.
The role also fosters a high-performing, cohesive team by overseeing country leads in Africa, Africa Finance Officer, and the Finance and Compliance Coordinator, Africa and providing strategic guidance on financial management, compliance, and safeguarding across Africa. The Deputy Africa Director also plays a pivotal role in coordinating program development, grant management, and external representation, ensuring that NRGI’s Africa portfolio is well-positioned to respond to evolving political economy shifts and governance dynamics in Africa.

Collaborating a cross-country team, Finance and Operations, the Office of the Managing Director, and Fundraising, the Deputy Africa Director strengthens program management tools, drives evidence-based programming, and ensures NRGI’s agility in an evolving landscape. They provide leadership on program quality, impact, and learning, oversee program implementation, and produce insights that inform NRGI’s global and Africa engagements.
The ideal candidate is a strategic and results-driven leader with strong systems, people, program, and grant management skills, professional astuteness, and the ability to navigate difficult political moments. They possess exceptional coordination skills, the ability to manage complex portfolios, and a track record of building partnerships across diverse teams and stakeholders.

Requirements
This role might be for you if have…
• Minimum 8-10 years of directly relevant work experience in program management, extractive sector governance, and or international development in Africa with evidence of strong outreach, networking, and advocacy at senior leadership levels
• Strong demonstrable program management skills and experience in project development, implementation, and impact harvesting. Strong background in non-profit management and a track record in strategic planning and leadership,
• Good knowledge in the extractive sector; management of oil, gas, mining, and energy transition; understanding of the complex ecosystem that results in resource-rich countries failing to achieve sustainable development.
• Experience setting strategy in partnership with senior management and country teams; ability to think conceptually and strategically with a 3–7-year horizon.
• Possess the gravitas, credibility, and ability to initiate and develop strategic relationships and influence key national stakeholders.
• Proven track record of leading and motivating multidisciplinary, geographically remote teams and operations across locations.
• Ability to ‘think politically,’ understanding motivations, pressures, power dynamics, and challenges faced by colleagues, partners, decision makers, and support teams to develop appropriate influencing strategies.
• Experience working in a complex or pioneering environment, including managing and creating opportunities for systemic change.
• Demonstrable experience in a leadership/management role, building and developing teams, and guiding people to success; collaborating and communicating effectively at all levels.
• Extensive experience in fund optimization and efficient contract management across teams and programs, including strong financial and asset management abilities to guide and effectively oversee program budgets.
• Experience managing and allocating resources efficiently; ability to manage annual project portfolio of at least $400,000-500,000 USD.
• Excellent French and English language skills, both written and spoken.
