Job purpose
The senior advisor to Humanitarian Communications and Engagement fills an essential function in the External Engagement and Resource Development (EERD) Team for Impact Communications. This role is critical to representing WV in the humanitarian space with UN agencies and donors in order to maximize impact, influence, and income for humanitarian response.
Reporting to the Director of Impact Communications, with a dotted line management to the Senior Director, Disaster Management External Engagement and Resource Development, this Sr. Advisor will be responsible for strategic engagement and further partnerships with external humanitarian actors and partners, especially UN agencies, as well support priority global events and processes. He/she will develop time-bound, intensive and targeted influencing strategies to position WV in the humanitarian space as a thought leader, as a partner of choice, and a reliable collaborator in the humanitarian space. He/She will engage closely with technical and operational teams to advance external engagement and resource development priorities and be expected to support the mobilization of resources as a critical member of the EERD and Global Impact teams.
She/he will have exceptional communications skills, strong representation and influencing skills, and a well-developed network of external industry contacts working in communications, external engagement, and partnerships. The external engagement aspects of this role will contribute towards positioning World Vision with key stakeholders to grow response income from UN/other multilaterals, increase World Vision’s influence on the international response, and strengthen existing partnerships. S/he will identify influencing opportunities, lead planning and preparation for events and engagements, as well as represent World Vision externally. They will support senior leaders and other World Vision staff to do the same.
This role will coordinate across multiple internal networks within WV, ensuring humanitarian response operations, reports, and opinion pieces are amplified across channels and related communication processes. This role will be responsible for reporting on communications and external engagement impacts related to the humanitarian space.
Scope / Distribution of responsibilities
• 30% – Strategic communications: Amplify the organization’s humanitarian response expertise, thought leadership, knowledge and communications
• 30% – External Engagement in the Sector: Grow reputation, profile, and positioning for income growth and policy influence in the humanitarian space through cultivating relationships with key stakeholders.
• 20% – High-profile events: Lead the planning and execution of key global humanitarian events and processes
• 20% – Internal collaboration and strategic planning: Support relevant WV internal planning and collaboration
Required professional experience, education, training, license, registration, and /or certification
• Masters level qualifications in Strategic Communications, Organisational Development, Business Administration, Journalism, Marketing or equivalent.
• 10 years relevant job experience in marketing, or communications fields with a minimum of 5 years at a senior management level; 3 years working in humanitarian or emergency response industry.
• In-depth understanding of civil society leverage points in the global humanitarian community including strong familiarity with relevant UN and coalition processes across NY and/or Geneva.
• Understanding of the humanitarian sector and its derivate standards, guidelines and tools, with a well-maintained network of external industry relationships.
• Excellent writing skills and the ability to translate complex material and data into coherent narratives that resonate with policymakers and peers
Preferred knowledge, skills and qualifications
• Experience working with a food-based agency at HQ or field level is valuable.
• Strategic approach to reputation, positioning and communications planning and knowledge of audience engagement.
• Demonstrated success in understanding audience and stakeholder needs and channel management.
• Management of multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams, including virtual teams.
• Excellent negotiation and collaboration skills with a demonstrated ability to think strategically, synthesize complex information and develop innovative influencing approaches.
• Strong communication skills with a demonstrated ability to communicate successfully with players in all segments of the humanitarian field, including high-level decision-makers and the highest level of organisation/business representatives.
• Leads independently on fast-paced issues, and tight deadlines and juggle competing demands.
Language Requirements
Excellent written and verbal communication in English. Other UN languages such as French, Arabic, Spanish, and Portuguese, are preferred.
Travel and/or Work Environment Requirement
• Work set up is homeworking/remote.
• The position requires the ability and willingness to travel nationally or internationally up to 30% of the time.
• Able to deploy to the field in a communications or grants-related role up to four weeks per year.

• During challenging periods, work hours may exceed 12 hours per day and require flexibility across different time zones.

• For positions filled in the United States, the typical salary range for this role is $82,894 to $103,617 USD.
Ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job type, job level, internal equity and budget. Exact salary offers will be determined by factors such as the candidate’s skills, qualifications, experience and geographic location.
