Job Description

The ideal candidate will apply their skills to a range of operational and research projects, including the economic evaluations and development of tools to advance the evidence base on the economic costs and benefits of new technologies applied to diverse health areas. The analytical work primarily requires the performance of costing and cost-effectiveness analysis using decision-analytic modeling. Disease modeling and statistical applications may also be employed. This role also requires the health economist to work in interdisciplinary teams, collaborate and manage contracts with partner organizations and engage with policymakers at the global and country level as well as relevant health personnel. The overarching role of the health economist is to generate and translate economic evidence to inform country and global-level decision making. We envision the successful candidate being based in one of PATH’s Africa offices and will work with and report to a USA-based health economist who has strong experience working in low- and middle-income countries.

PATH is currently recruiting for a Health Economist with experience in the design and performance of economic evaluations of health care interventions. The Health Economist will work in the Medical Devices and Health Technologies (MDHT) program to advance PATH’s global work to ensure that technologies reach those in low- and middle-income countries who need them most. The MDHT program at PATH develops, advances, and facilitates commercialization of health technologies for low-resource settings. The Health Economist will support multiple project teams within the MDHT program and across the organization. Project teams are multidisciplinary and generally include members with technical/scientific, public health, communications, business/commercialization, and administrative support expertise.


Responsibilities:

• Design and conduct economic analyses for public health interventions or specific health technologies, including:
o Studies to collect primary data on the costs of health programs or implementing specific health care interventions.
o Cost-effectiveness and health impact modeling of devices, vaccines, medications, and diagnostics.

• Lead and participate in report writing, developing presentations, and publication of results and findings in peer-reviewed journals.
• Work independently as well as collaborate with other health economists, interdisciplinary teams and international partners, to design and conduct economic

• Provide input and guidance to teams on methods and modeling approaches that can be employed to ensure understanding of the underlying value of an intervention/technology, compared to the status quo or alternative

Required Experience


• Advanced degree with a preference for PhD in economics, health economics, or related
• Understanding and work experience focused on low- and middle-income country health programs.
• Experience conducting economic evaluations of health care interventions in low- and middle-income countries.
• Experience with primary data collection for costing studies of health care programs.
• Desire to work in one of PATH’s Africa offices, with preference for Uganda or Senegal.
• Ability to work independently and collaborate with colleagues across time zones.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate research methods and results into publishable manuscripts for peer-reviewed
• Ability to work effectively with interdisciplinary colleagues to achieve team
• Experience in building health economic models using software such as Excel and TreeAge and conducting sensitivity analysis using software such as aRisk, or similar type
• Working knowledge of data analysis software such as STATA or R.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. Additional language skills a
