J-PAL Africa seeks an Education & Training Manager to support its mission of promoting evidence-based policymaking.
We are looking for a creative and dynamic individual with a strong quantitative and economics background, a passion for rigorous evaluation, an eye for opportunity, a dedication to quality and a commitment to increasing opportunities for African researchers and practitioners who want to work on randomised evaluations on the continent.
The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) consists of a global network of academics who specialise in conducting randomised evaluations of social policies/programmes to generate scientific evidence about what works in the fight against poverty.
J-PAL’s Education & Training group is responsible for designing resources and trainings to build researcher capacity to conduct randomized evaluations and policymaker capacity to use evidence from randomized evaluations effectively, with the aim to make J-PAL’s expertise and knowledge on randomised evaluations always more accessible to researchers, students and practitioners.
The Education & Training manager at J-PAL Africa is expected to take the lead on all training activities, and in addition is expected to set the course of J-PAL Africa’s action on increasing the representation of African researchers within J-PAL’s network and experimental economics.
Responsibilities:
Lead the portfolio of Education & Training activities at J-PAL Africa:
- Design or adapt training content in partnership with Research, Education and Training (RET) function at J-PAL Global.
- Manage budget and people resources (affiliated researchers, staff, suppliers, external contributors) to implement trainings effectively and efficiently.
- Lead the promotion of the MITx MicroMasters course and support the integration and adaptation of existing training materials and J-PAL courses in academic curriculums at African universities.
- Develop the strategy for Education & Training at J-Pal Africa with guidance from the J-PAL Africa leadership including developing new projects aimed at supporting African researchers and practitioners working on evaluations on the continent:
Build a strategy for J-PAL Africa education and training activities in line with our other priorities and those of our global Research, Education and Training (RET) team.Leverage existing initiatives to create more opportunities for African researchers to access J-PAL resources and funding, including engaging with top academics from the J-PAL network who may have control and/or influence over such opportunities
Gather learnings across projects and act as a knowledge lead for J-PAL Africa’s work on African scholars.
Create and maintain a collaborative network of African scholars working on evaluations:
Build relationships with top economics and related departments at Universities across the continent, and other evidence focused organizations.
Identify and connect with talented African researchers working on RCTs and with an interest in conducting experimental research.Design communication tools (newsletter, webinar and other events) to create a sense of community and leverage prominent figures as “brand ambassadors” for J-PAL on the continent.
Manage African scholar programmes embedded in research initiatives including reviewing research applications and setting up structures for support.
This position will report to the Associate Director of Policy.
Minimum required:
- Masters in economics or a related field, with a knowledge base in econometrics / statistics, microeconomics and development economics.
- 4 years of relevant professional experience.
- Strong foundations in experimental economics and statistics, including advanced knowledge of randomised evaluations and public policy evaluation methodologies.
- Appetite for collaborative work, proven experience in facilitating partnerships and developing projects, ideally with researchers and universities.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Excellent organization and proven ability to manage multiple projects at the same time, successfully complete assigned tasks and meet deadlines while performing high quality work.
- Ability to work remotely and willingness to travel frequently in Africa.
- Proficiency in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and a statistical analysis software like Stata or R.
- Fluency in English, French is advantageous
