Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)
Main purpose of job:
The British Embassy in Dakar is looking for a dynamic, experienced, and highly motivated individual to join our team as a handyman/plumber. The Plumber is responsible for installing, maintaining, repairing, and monitoring all plumbing systems within the embassy compound, office and embassy properties. The role ensures continuous water supply, proper sanitation, and compliance with safety and property standards, while minimizing disruptions to embassy operations and occupants. Roles and responsibilities:
1. Plumbing Works (Primary Function)
• Carry out routine maintenance and repairs on water supply, drainage, and sanitation systems
• Repair leaks, unblock pipes and drains, and replace faulty taps, valves, toilets, sinks, and showers · Maintain and repair water heaters, pumps, tanks, and plumbing fixtures
• Respond promptly to plumbing emergencies (burst pipes, flooding, blocked sewage)
2. General Handyman
• Perform minor carpentry, masonry, tiling, and painting works as required
• Repair doors, locks, windows, hinges, cabinets, and basic furniture
• Carry out minor electrical-related tasks (e.g. replacing switches, sockets, light fittings – within authorized limits)
• Assist with small refurbishment or improvement works in office and properties
• Carry out works in occupied residences with professionalism, discretion, and respect for occupants
• Liaise with landlords, contractors, or Estates staff when escalation is required
3. Preventive Maintenance
• Conduct regular inspections of plumbing and general building installations
• Identify maintenance issues early and report risks or major repair needs
• Support planned preventive maintenance programs for embassy premises
4. Health, Safety & Compliance
• Ensure all works comply with health and safety standards, embassy procedures, and local regulations
• Use tools and materials safely and maintain a clean, safe work area
• Report hazards, incidents, or unsafe installations immediately
5. Emergency & After-Hours Support
• Provide support during urgent maintenance situations, including outside normal working hours if required
• Take immediate action to limit damage to buildings, furniture, and equipment
6. Reporting & Coordination
• Report completed tasks, outstanding issues, and material needs to the Facilities/Estates team
• Keep basic records of maintenance and repair works carried out
• Support and oversee external contractors when instructed
7. Corporate
As a member of the Embassy, you will be expected to make a corporate contribution to the smooth running and wellbeing of the embassy, e.g. by volunteering as a member of a corporate committee.
Essential qualifications, skills and experience
• At least 3 years previous experience as a plumber
• Qualification in plumbing
• Experience of facility management role to include maintenance ·
• Proactive and customer focused
• Hold a valid Senegalese driving license
• Ability to work collaboratively within a diverse team and contribute to wider corporate objectives.
• Commitment to organisational values, professionalism, and inclusive working.
• Ability to work independently, manage competing demands, and respond to fast moving priorities.

• Basic computer literacy
• Good spoken English Language both verbal and written
