Background
UNICEF WCARO is seeking an enthusiastic and solution-oriented intern to join the Social Policy team and provide support to information and knowledge management. The regional Social Policy teams provides oversight and support to programming in 24 country offices in the region, in the fields of child poverty, social protection, public finance for children, and local governance. Beyond the provision of guidance and technical support in these areas of work, the role of the Social Policy team includes sharing of relevant information in the field of Social Policy, document experiences of country teams, and facilitate dialogue and experience sharing between country teams.

How can you make a difference?

Objectives
The primary objective for the internship is to support the Social Policy section of the UNICEF West and Central Africa Regional Office (WCARO) with information and knowledge management related to its main areas of work: child poverty, social protection, public finance for children, and local governance.

Scope of work
Functioning as part of the Social Policy team, the intern will participate in on-going initiatives, routine meetings, and communication with country teams in the region. Specific tasks will be assigned in relation to strengthening information exchange and sharing with country offices, documentation of experiences, and support to on-going projects. The internship will offer an opportunity to :
• Familiarize with and get exposure to Social Policy work at UNICEF
• Learn about child rights challenges and social policy programme responses in the West and Central African region
• Strengthen skills in information and knowledge management within a network of 24 country teams.

The specific objectives of the internship are the following:
• Support communication and knowledge exchange within the regional UNICEF network of 24 Social Policy teams, including through the existing regional virtual Social Policy platform, and development of the document repository and maintenance of the database
• Document selected innovative experiences with Social Policy interventions in the region
• Support the regional Social Policy team with the identification and analysis of regional socioeconomic trends with a perspective on their implications for children
• Contribute to ensure relevant regional input into the global Social Policy newsletter and similar experience sharing initiatives
• Contribute to on-going Social Policy regional initiatives and participate in routine work proceses and team meetings as relevant.

Expected deliverables
The intern will provide significant support to the on-going section work to achieve the following deliverables:
• The Social Policy regional communication virtual platform is actively used by the regional Social Policy network
• Two innovative Social Policy support experiences have been documented for sharing with a broad audience, in collaboration with country teams
• The regional Social Policy team has an up to date database and analysis on relevant regional trends in the field of Social Policy, with a focus on the socioeconomic impact of COVID19.

Timing: Expected start date is September 2021

Administrative Issues
The intern will work under the supervision of the Regional Advisor Social Policy who will be responsible for general coordination, support, and scheduling. Weekly meetings will be held between the intern and the supervisor to discuss progress and adjustments.

The internship is home-based.

The internship is expected to use his/her own materiel (computer, printer etc…). UNICEF will facilitate contact and issue UNICEF e-mail adress.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have
• Be enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate or Ph.D. degree programme (economics, social sciences or any other relevant discipline), or have graduated within the past two years.
• Be proficient in at least one of UNICEF’s working languages: English, French or Spanish. Fluency in French and English are required.
• Have excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records.
• Have no immediate relatives (e.g. father, mother, brother, sister) working in any UNICEF office; and
• Have no other relatives in the line of authority which the intern will report to.
