Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

UN WOMEN West & Central Africa Regional Office has been supporting multi-initiatives through programming, global advocacy and building strategic partners with national governments, civil society, UN agencies, and other bilateral and multilateral development organizations. In this process, UN WOMEN WCARO has contributed to building interest, capacity, and commitment to integrating Gender issues processes in the West and Central Region. UN WOMEN Regional and country offices are supporting several other initiatives at regional and country levels and there is a need for visibility.

Reporting to the Regional Communication Specialist, the Media Relations Associate will be in charge of supporting the WCARO Communication Unit in tying and maintaining a strong relationship with media in west and central Africa. He/She will also be supporting the signing of strong media compacts with regional media, and media monitoring.

The results have a substantial impact on the effectiveness of UN Women’s regional communications and outreach efforts, enhancing the visibility, raising awareness, and understanding of UN Women and its mission, thus helping ensure UN Women achieves its strategic goals.

In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
