The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Rangeland Scientist to work in West Africa (based in our Dakar, Senegal) office. We are expanding our portfolio on research for development in rangelands in Senegal and Mali, as well as some regional initiatives. This includes a focus on improvements in land and resource tenure and governance, rangeland management, raising productivity of rangelands and their restoration as appropriate and monitoring of progress. We prioritise participatory and capacity building approaches.

ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa.

Key Responsibilities
• Lead ILRI’s research for development activities in rangelands in Senegal and Mali working with other CGIAR centers.
• Develop relevant partnerships with NARS, research institutes, NGO/CSOs and communities.
• Capacity building of partners, trainings as appropriate and development of training materials.
• Policy engagement and influencing at national and regional levels.
• Reporting of progress and engagement with donors as required.
• Writing popular and scientific publications.
• Write proposals and mobilize resources

Requirements
PhD in a relevant area, such as dryland management, ecology, rangelands, pastoralism, anthropology, natural resource management or governance.
• Fluent in written and spoken English and French.
• Training, facilitation, adult learning skills.
• At least 5 years working in research in West African drylands/rangelands including management, restoration, monitoring.
• Understanding of policy and legislation on rangelands/drylands in Senegal, Mali and the Sahel region
• Experience in policy and legislation engagement on rangelands/drylands in Senegal, Mali or the region
• Experience working in the region with development actors, Great Green Wall projects or other projects in development.
• Experience of participatory/community-based approaches to rangeland management
• Experience in use of remote sensing
• Knowledge of One Health is desirable.

Post location: The position will be based Dakar with frequent travels in the sub region

This position is at job level HG 18 the position is a 3-year contract, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding. ILRI offers a competitive salary and benefits package which includes; pension, medical and other insurances
