Mission and objectives
UNOWAS has the responsibility for preventive diplomacy, good offices and political mediation and facilitation efforts in West Africa and the Sahel. UNOWAS also works to consolidate peace and democratic governance in countries emerging from conflict or political crises.

Context
It is within this framework, and mainly in order to follow up on the needs expressed by actors in the region that UNOWAS recruited, in April 2020, a Consultant with the mission to support regional organizations, government actors, civil society, universities and training centers in their efforts and mobilization for the efficient and effective implementation of resolutions 2250 (2015) and 2419 (2018). The support of the Consultant has enabled the implementation of several activities,
Furthermore, interaction with the actors of the region working on youth, peace and security issues has been strengthened in the preparation of documents such as the reports on COVID-19 and in the implementation of certain activities.
In addition, UNOWAS and ECOWAS built partnership for organizing a regional youth conference for peace and security, with the first one held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, in 2018, and the second one in Abuja, in December 2021. Participants to the two-event adopted Ouagadougou Declaration and Abuja Call to Action that recommended key interventions for enhancing young women and men contribution to establishing a climate of peace and serenity and building economically and socially strong communities.
For supporting this process, UNOWAS intends to recruit a UN Volunteer for 12 months.

Task description
Under the direct supervision of the Mission’s Gender Affairs Officer, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:
- Support UNOWAS Gender Unit in its efforts for the implementation of resolutions 2250 (2015), 2419 (2018) and 2535 (2020) in West Africa and the Sahel through design, implementation and follow-up of the actions recommended by young women and men of the region.
Specifically, s/he is expected to:
- Contribute to development and implementation of a proposal based on recommen-dations formulated by participants at the youth annual forums;
- Support for the organization of the regional youth forum planned for 2022;
- Support young women and men organizations in resource mobilization;
- Maintain contact and interaction with youth organizations and network, as well as all actors in the region working on youth issues;
- Develop and manage appropriate socio medias facilitating interactions within young women and men organizations and networks around West Africa and the Sahel re-gion;
- Produce quarterly newsletters on West Africa and Sahel youth activities;
- Assume all relevant duties contributing to UNOWAS Gender Unit goals.

Additional eligibility criteria
This assignment is funded by the Government of the Republic of Ireland and therefore specific criteria apply:
- Candidates must be between 18 and 29 years of age throughout the assignment.
- Only the following are eligible to apply: Irish citizens or a European Economic Area nationals with an unrestricted right to reside in Ireland or have a declaration of refugee status from the Minister for Justice and Law Reform.

Selected candidates will be invited for an Assignment Preparation Training in April 2022.
The start of the assignment is scheduled for April 2022.

Requirements
Required experience
- 0 years of experience in the development field (up to 3 years).
- Demonstrated interest and/or experience in project and program development techniques; - Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded; Preferably experience in multi-country work; Strong ability to translate data into effective, strategic, well-written reports;
- Experience working in the West African sub-region would be an asset; Good knowledge of youth associations and movements in West Africa and the Sahel would be an asset; Willing to actively work and collaborate with the UN system ( alignment and complementary of programme of work; joint advocacy and programming ; etc.. )
