Based in our Dakar, Senegal, office, the journalist occupying this role is expected to originate and produce, as part of a team, a wide variety of news and current affairs content for BBC Afrique’s radio and Digital output that would also appeal to audiences across Africa. There will be focus on original and distinctive journalism.
In addition to producing original content, part of your job will be to translate and reversion content (articles, audio, videos, infographics, etc.) from other services and departments of the BBC under the guidance of a Senior Journalist and/or the News Editor.
You will be asked to interact with BBC Afrique’s audience either on air or social media, as needed.
This role is only open to candidates who are already based in Senegal. They must have the right to work in the country and should be able to prove it with a valid resident’s card.


Main Responsibilities
• Research, write, assemble, edit, and deliver content in various formats such as video, audio, and text, to the highest professional standards.
• Produce high quality content in both French and English in various media formats.
• May be required to present the content on radio, TV or online. This might be live or recorded.
• May include the production and presentation of programmes. This might be live or recorded.
• Exercise editorial judgment in developing story ideas and producing accurate and impartial journalism.
• Undertake pre- and post-production and studio work, live and pre-recorded.
• Liaise closely with other team members and with other departments in the BBC, to ensure that content is shared, duplication is avoided, and best practices are upheld.
• Take a lead within a team setting or on delivering a specific piece of journalism or project as appropriate.
• Tailor different news treatments for different audiences ensuring that the output reflects the audiences we serve.
• Prioritise and plan activities taking into account all the relevant issues and factors such as deadlines, staffing and resources available.
• Produce engaging packages through a range of production skills.
• Delivering to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial standards.
• At all times to carry out duties in accordance with the BBC health and safety policy.

Essential:
• Significant recent experience as a journalist, with a good knowledge of digital production techniques.
• Demonstrates sound editorial judgement based upon a clear understanding of the BBC’s distinctive news agenda, the requirements of news and current affairs coverage and the audience.
• Ability to use technology as required, to gather material for broadcast and other formats.
• Understands how a team works effectively.
• Able to build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of people.
