JOB DESCRIPTION

ORG. SETTING AND REPORTING
This post is located within the Political Affairs Section of UNOWAS and the incumbent reports to the Senior Political Affairs Officer/Team Leader, Gulf of Guinea Cluster.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Within delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

• Identifies and monitors political developments, trends and emerging issues in assigned countries in West Africa and the Sahel; assesses trends which might affect the political situation and the political impact of intra-regional challenges; recommends solutions/possible action by United Nations.
• Analyses political and related events within assigned countries with a view to provide early warning advice to UNOWAS leadership.
• Prepares analytical reports and papers on sensitive and high-profile matters of concern in assigned countries, drafts notes, background papers, talking points, speeches and other correspondence for the Special Representative of the Secretary General (SRSG) and as required.
• Supports the good offices of SRSG UNOWAS.
• Contributes to UNOWAS’ engagements in the Lake Chad Basin; collaborates closely with UNOCA and other relevant institutions to support the good offices of SRSG UNOWAS in addressing the challenges in the Lake Chad Basin.
• Plans and participates in working-level and high-level missions to assigned countries.
• Meets regularly with relevant stakeholders including UN staff, national officials, CSOs and regional and sub-regional organisations to ensure coherence and complementarity in mandate implementation
• Provides up-to-date information to UNOWAS leadership regarding substantive political matters and makes recommendations on actions to take.
• Maintains contacts with other UN entities, other international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters. Participates in conferences, seminars and academic fora related to his/her assigned area of expertise.
• Performs other related duties as required.

EDUCATION
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

WORK EXPERIENCE
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in political affairs, international relations, law, diplomacy, conflict resolution or related area.

At least two years of experience working in West Africa and the Sahel is desirable.

LANGUAGES
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English and French (both oral and written) is required. Working knowledge of Portuguese is desirable.

ASSESSMENT

Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
