Description de l'offre

Consultant - Technical Assistance to the UNICEF West and Central Africa Regional Office for a Business Nutrition Forum. 11 months

Job no: 555329
Contract type: Consultant
Level: Consultancy
Categories: Nutrition

UNICEF works in some of the world’s toughest places, to reach the world’s most disadvantaged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them fulfill their potential.

Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone.

And we never give up.
For every child, hope

1. Background
The West and Central Africa region (WCAR) is home to 90.3 million children of under five children (13.3% of global children population) but shares 19.6% of the global burden of stunting (29.3 million children). Trend analysis indicates that WCAR is currently off-track to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) for nutrition to reduce wasting and stunting. Malnutrition impacts negatively on child survival, cognitive development, school performance, and is a risk factor for chronic disease in adulthood. All these factors affect the economy of the countries in the region.
The impact of malnutrition on West Africa's regional economy could be estimated to be 27 billion United States dollars (USD) annually using 4% of the regional GDP (Horton, 2013). Good nutrition requires access to nutrition diet, quality services and good practices of care givers. While UNICEF has invested a lot in promising access to services and changing practices, its action in improving access to safe, nutritious, and affordable food has been limited. The role of the private sector around food is key and has not been leveraged enough. Prices are a key determinant of access to food in West Africa as households rely on markets for two-thirds of their food supply.

Food prices in sub-Saharan Africa are 30 to 40% more expensive than in the rest of the world at comparable levels of GDP per capita. Therefore, governments need to stimulate productivity by reducing losses and investing in more initiatives which will increase access of nutritious foods for young children.
