Org. Setting and Reporting
The intern will be operating as part of the Research and Awareness Section in the UNODC Regional Office for West and Central Africa (ROSEN), under the general guidance of the Research Officer, Head of the Research and Awareness Section for West and Central Africa or to the Associate Research Officer for West and Central Africa. She/he will assist the latter in the monitoring and trends in the area of drugs, crime and terrorism in West and Central Africa, as well as for the preparation of analytical studies and threat assessments on the matter. Part of the research is the analysis of linkages between drug/crime issues and economic development, security and governance, using relevant data.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time; interns work five days per week (40 hours).

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises.
Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship.”

Responsibilities
The Intern will carry out the following activities:
•Collecting and reviewing information from governments, inter-governmental/non-governmental organizations, media, UNODC or other UN Offices, and other relevant sources;
•Selecting relevant sources, information and data;
•Assisting the Research and Awareness Section in analysing information and data and indentifying relevant issues and trends;
•Assisting UNODC ROSEN Research and Awareness Section in developing/maintaining databases compiling and analysing data;
•Preparing monthly briefs with key trends and disseminating them to key stakeholders;
•Assisting UNODC ROSEN Research and Awareness Section in the daily management of internal and external financial and administrative duties;
•Contributing generally to the preparation and publication of UNODC information estimates and reports on drugs and crime;
•Assisting the Research and Awareness Section in the coordination and evaluation of projects.

Education
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

•Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). (OFFICIAL WRITTEN PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY SUPPORTING ONE OF THE ABOVE POSSIBILITIES MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION);

•Be computer literate in standard software applications;

•Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

•Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.”

Languages
English or French are the working languages of the United Nations. For the internship advertised, fluency in oral and written English and French is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
